Jet Pascua, through his artistic research project Abandon, has delved into at least three generations of trauma related to being abandoned. The framework for his investigation has been the intricate tapestry that makes up both sides of the artist’s own family. Driven by a deep desire to uncover the stories of his ancestors, Pascua has conducted insightful interviews and sifted through large amounts of archived material.
Jet Pascua's exhibition at Bærum Kunsthall, Echoes of Departure, features the short film Hendiatris, which is part of the artistic research project Abandon. Pascua’s goal was to fully grasp the complexity of his own family's many stories about parents who have abandoned their children — all in an effort to understand the factors that shaped his relatives’ decisions and actions. These choices have echoed throughout history from generation to generation and have significantly influenced and shaped the destinies and relationship patterns of their descendants.
By expanding the project beyond his own family's personal stories, Echoes of Departure seeks to explore a broader manifestation of abandonment — a phenomenon deeply rooted in the collective psyche of the Filipino people. It centers on the pervasive belief that opportunities for a better life are scarce within the country's borders. This prevailing mindset leads people to perceive overseas work as the only path to a brighter future. In this way, a cycle of farewells continues, where generation after generation leaves family and homeland in search of greener pastures.
